I had the pleasure of meeting both Mr DeNiro and Mr Walken during down times on the Bangkok set. Neither were very famous yet, although DeNiro had Taxi Driver, Mean Streets and The Godfather behind him already. Walken had appeared in a few small films. I'd actually seen one of them, Next Stop Greenwich Village. and had a small part in Annie Hall before working on The Deer Hunter. They were incredibly committed to their roles, particularly DeNiro, who never left character as far I could see, even during long breaks.

This is my comment - during our election a Judge ran for office, he said he never dated a fifteen year old girl that he didn't get the mothers permission to date at the time he was 35 he was elected as a Judge after the 'dates' but it's OK because Vanessa Williams was not her mom. I am mystified by the almost unanimous praise heaped upon this film by most film critics and viewers. I recognize that "The Deer Hunter" is no turkey and has a number of riveting scenes (the first Russian roulette scenes in Vietnam are sweat-inducing) but it is mostly over wrought and self-indulgent. Cimino did not use a camera to direct this picture, but a sledge hammer. RIP Mr. Cimino... They should remake the movie and cast Rusty Cage as Travis. The Deer hunters. The deer hunter simpsons.

The movie was so boring but i thought it would pick up and it never did. a good chunk of the movie is a wedding scene with almost no dialogue. They shouldn't called this movie wedding rehearsals,3 minutes of deer hunting, 10 minutes of war and an ending that just pisses you right off. This is by far the most over rated movie of its time, excluding blade runner a decade later. There is almost no real entertainment to be had in this film. The messages of the movie are cliché's about how war changes people but its been done much better other films. If you want to sit there for over 2 hours and watch a tedious wedding rehearsal with a few minutes of actual content then you'll love this, if your not then avoid this like the plague and just watch the 5 minute trailer everything that this movie has to offer is shown in the trailer on the DVD, including the "surprise" ending.

This is the weirdest movie I've ever seen. The deer hunter russian roulette scene. When I daw this movie as a boy. I knew that the movie was of a higher caliber than most other movies. The deer hunter you're just too good to be true. The deer hunter oscar winner. I enjoy the mood of this but ultimately, the lack of a plot sort of bothered me. He must have been on the brink from the start of the film because that was a quick descent into violence. Just kill them to make a point? I mean, yeah, at least because of Iris' youth.
